The Importance of Properly Balanced Pools and Spas

Properly balanced water is one of the keys to healthy swimming and hot tubbing. It is also a critical component in the lifespan of pool surfaces and vinyl liners, pumps, heaters, decks and deck Swimming pool PH levelequipment like ladders and rails.

Some auto sanitizers – salt generators for example – have a tendency to negatively affect water balance, especially the pH. A very high or low pH makes the pool uncomfortable to swim in, creates scale, staining and can drastically reduce the life span of pumps, heaters, pool finishes and vinyl liners. In many instances, wrinkled liners are the direct result of unbalanced water.

The following is the range for safe, healthy swimming:

  • pH 7.2 – 7.6

Check it weekly

pool water The following is best checked professionally at least once a month. Take a sample, about ½ a litre from the pool in front of the skimmer about elbow deep. Rinse the container in the pool’s water first. Bring the container in to us for testing. Don’t leave it in the car all day, as sunlight, heat and plastic or glass containers can alter the chemistry of the water sample. Try to bring it in within 4 hours.

  • Total alkalinity (T.A): 80-120 ppm (parts per million)
  • Calcium hardness (C.A): 200-300 ppm
  • Cyanuric acid (C.Y.A): 30 – 60ppm
  • Chlorine (CL): 1-3 ppm
